Ki-Hyun Chun, CPA Firm was founded by Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun in April of 1983. Dr. Chun's path to becoming a CPA was not a straight forward one. Originally, he planned to come to the U.S. to study journalism on a Rotary Ambassadorial scholarship. While at Lenoir Rhyne University, he noticed a classmate struggling with his statistics assignment and offered to help. Chun provided a helpful tip on how to solve a problem and the classmate was amazed at how much easier the tip made the assignment. The classmate was so impressed that he offered to pay Chun to tutor him at $5 an hour. Chun was working at the cafeteria washing dishes to help pay for living expenses to supplement his scholarship stipend, making $1.05 an hour.

Quickly realizing how much time he could save tutoring rather than washing dishes, Chun agreed. His classmate touted Chun as having exceptional talent at math but Chun did not think he was any more talented at math than his classmates growing up in Korea. Soon word got around and Chun began tutoring 10 more classmates for 11 total at $55 an hour. After hearing about the success of the classmates being tutored under Chun, Professor Frances W. Fitz took notice and eventually counseled him to pursue a career in accounting, advice which shaped the rest of his life.

Dr. Chun's affinity for making complex accounting principles accessible for others to understand is one of the hallmarks of his success as a CPA. Before he opened up his CPA practice in 1983, there were no other Asian CPAs in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Most Asian-Americans were not aware of federal tax laws and regulations primarily due to a lack of tax services provided by anyone with a cultural sensitivity toward this population of mostly small business owners. As a result, Dr. Chun would travel throughout these states teaching seminars on the tax rules and regulations an average of six to eight times a year.

Furthermore, in 1988, he began publishing an annual tax brochure in English, Korean and Chinese, which provided the most recent tax rules and regulations. In addition, Dr. Chun taught Accounting, Federal Taxation, Business, Economics, and Auditing as Adjunct Professor for two years at Pfeiffer University and seven years at Johnson C. Smith University. Dr. Chun also worked as a Cost Accountant for three years at Vermont American Corporation in Boone, NC and as Vice President of Finance at Longview Hosiery Company in Hickory, NC for seven years.

He is currently still in New York working in the Times Square office of Ernst & Young in the transactions tax advisory group. There he assists with providing tax advice to corporate and private equity clients in mergers, acquisitions, dispositions, and restructuring transactions.
